CREDAI to upskill 37,000 construction workers under Nipun Mission RPL as it collaborates with MoHUA & NSDC

• The construction sector will aim to add 35 million skilled workers to the workforce as it’s poised to employ 75 million people by 2022

As the construction industry steadies itself to add close to 35 million skilled workers and build on its position of being the largest employer, by the end of 2022, CREDAI will join hands with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), along with other industry stakeholders to implement an upskilling initiative and provide a platform to 37,000 workers to grow in their respective domains.

With a major contribution of 7-8% to the country’s GDP, the Real Estate and Construction sector continues to employ a large chunk of people as it supports 251+ allied industries. The construction sector currently employs 40 million people as workers which mainly constitutes employees who migrate from rural areas to cities seeking better job opportunities. However, these workers are bereft of financial security owing to their lack of qualifications and lack knowledge to grow up the ladder.

Continuing its commitment to improving the lives of construction workers through its foray into skill development in 2011, CREDAI remains resilient towards the cause as the industry is poised to become the largest employer by the end of this year (2022), employing more than 75 million people. The apex governing body under the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (Nipun) mission will take the onus on adding more value to their lives as one of the core Project Implementation Agencies (PIAs), in a bid to upskill and manage the acute shortage of skilled manpower as per the requirements of the industry.

As part of this process, CREDAI will be tasked to partner with developers under its aegis to set up Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) centers at these partner construction sites, Fresh-Skilling (Short-term training program) through Plumbing and Infrastructure SSCs, and eventually provide international opportunities for these skilled workers under the International Workforce Mobility (IWM) scheme.

“As the real estate sector continues to evolve and develop capabilities to service the changed preferences of consumers, it is integral to upskill the backbone of the construction sector – the construction workers – and bring them up to speed for the best practices being followed in the domain,” Mr. Harsh Vardhan Patodia, President, CREDAI highlighted the importance of an upskilling initiative led by the apex body at the blue-riband event.

He further added, “While the assessment and training program will help these workers equip themselves with improved methodologies to carry out their daily activities, passing these training programs will also entail RPL certificates, a monetary reward structure, and even accidental insurance. Additionally, this would empower the workers to 7increase their wages, manage better productivity and eventually lead a better quality of life.”

As industry partners for Skill Training of Construction Workers under MoHUA in line with the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) scheme, CREDAI and NAREDCO will identify job roles of aspirational value in the sector, define an outcome-based approach for onsite training, and outline tangible benefits for the construction workers to be able to gain insight on the outcome associated with it. Both the governing bodies will be allotted 40,000 targets each for the implementation of 6 hours of on-the-job training and be responsible for sharing monthly reports on the progress of these candidates.
